Programme intro
37 years of conducting research
The KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) is a longstanding partnership between Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Wellcome and the University if Oxford. Established in 1989, the Programme conducts world-class, multi-dsicplinary research spanning molecular and cellular science, clinical research, epidemiology, population helath and health systems and policy.Â
We are headquartered in Kilifi at the KEMRI Centre for Gepgraphic Medicine Research-Coast(CGMRC), with an additional research hub in Nairobi and a collaborative site in Mbale at the Mbale Clinical Research Insititute in Eastern Uganda. We also maintain extensive research collaborations globally.Â
In addition to research, KWTRP is deeply committed to developing research capacity across Africa, nurturing the next generation of African scientists, and undertaking robust community, public and policy engagement to ensure the relevance, uptake and impact of our work.Â
Strategy Anchors
Our strategic plan is anchored on three interlinked pillars: impact, sustainability, and culture. These pillars reflect our vision of a research institution that not only generates high-quality science, but also ensures that this science translates into meaningful improvements in health and well-being, while operating on a financially, environmentally, and operationally sustainable foundation, and defined by an inclusive, empowering, and values-driven research culture.
WHAT WE DO
Strategic focus areas
Our strategy is underpinned by the following core objectives that reflect our commitment to scientific excellence, impact, and capacity development.
