Discovery and Development

This strategic focus area aims to advance scientific discoveries that deepen our understanding of human health, pathogens, and disease mechanisms, and translate them into innovative interventions with measurable public health impact. We build on our strong foundation in basic science, clinical research, population health research, health services and systems research, and data science to generate novel insights into the molecular mechanisms, host and pathogen biology, and epidemiology of disease and health service delivery. This innovative ecosystem drives the development of diagnostics, therapeutics, vaccines, and clinical applications. This focus area positions the Programme as a leading centre for health innovation by bridging the gap between fundamental science and applied solutions.

Sub-objectives

Enhance our understanding of disease mechanisms through advanced discovery science to identify and inform the design and development of effective prevention and treatment interventions.

Accelerate the preclinical development of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutic interventions targeting high-burden and neglected diseases, to advance locally relevant, high-impact solutions.

Harness data science and integrated health datasets to generate actionable insights and develop clinical and public health tools, including diagnostics and decision-support algorithms.
